Health Insurance

The Iowa Bankers Benefit Plan (IBBP) offers health insurance through Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa (Wellmark). Wellmark provides health insurance to over two million members in Iowa and South Dakota. As a member of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa is part of a national network of 39 plans that insures more than 99 million people—or nearly one in three Americans—in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Iowa Bankers Insurance and Services, Inc. (IBIS) manages all the administrative functions for the health plan, including customer service, and contracts with Wellmark for provider service contracting and claims processing.

Wellmark Alliance Select PPO Plan

The IBBP offers health insurance coverage through Wellmark’s Alliance Select PPO Plan. All plans include chiropractic benefits and all plans include one routine vision exam annually, subject to the provisions of the plan including applicable out-of-pocket costs. A routine vision exam includes contact lens fitting, and the plan covers eye refraction charges billed in addition to the vision exam. The features of Wellmark’s Alliance Select PPO Plan include:

  • The plan offers access to an extensive provider network and the freedom to see any provider and still receive benefits. In Iowa, 100% of hospitals and 99% of physicians are in the Alliance Select Network, and nationwide more than 90% of hospitals and 80% of doctors are in the BlueCard out-of-state network.
     
  • The plan provides direct access to any hospital or provider with no referral requirements.
     
  • In-network providers offer lower out-of-pocket costs, file claims, and fulfill notification requirements.
     
  • The plan uses coinsurance, which means you pay a certain percentage of the provider’s billed charge for office services up to the out-of-pocket maximum. For example, if the coinsurance is 10% for an in-network provider, you would pay 10% and the health plan would pay 90% for office-based services. Most other services are subject to a deductible (the amount you must pay before insurance begins paying, for example, $1000 or $2000, and coinsurance. 
     
  • The plan design includes coverage for preventive care, office visits, lab work and X-rays, surgery, hospital stays, and prescription drugs.
     
  • Prescription drug coverage is Blue Rx Preferred, a prescription drug card program with a tiered copayment structure. This means the cost of the drug varies according to the tier the drug is on to encourage the use of generic or lower-priced drugs. Blue Rx Preferred provides access to a large pharmacy network that includes both national retail chains and independent pharmacies. You also have the option to fill prescriptions via mail service.
     
  • The plan has no lifetime maximum for benefits.
     

Health and Wellness Programs

The plan includes health and wellness programs to help you manage and maintain your health at no additional cost. These programs include:

  • BeWell 24/7 — Telephone support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Provides access to a nurse or other health professional for care navigation, nurse support, decision support, and health advocacy.
     
  • Condition Support — Interventions and support to help people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and asthma, learn self-management skills.
     
  • Case Management — Interventions and support to maximize benefits for members facing a serious illness, surgery, or injury.
     
  • Pregnancy Care — Provides information and personal support through all stages of pregnancy and after delivery. Moms-to-be are identified for the program through claims information, physician referrals, or you can enroll voluntarily.
     
  • Online Wellness Tools — Web-based assessment tools and programs designed to help members assess, maintain, or improve their health.
     
  • Utilization Management — Programs designed to help manage overall medical spending.
