Event Detail

Event Description

In-Class Topics (4 hours general):  In this part of the seminar we will try to gain a better understanding of insurance operations and functional areas. We’ll also focus on insurance contracts and provisions, discussing the options that policyholders have to modify the terms of an insurance contract. Finally, we’ll look at our tort system from the perspective of insurers, policyholders and injured parties. Problems with the fault based tort system will be discussed and possible solutions presented.

In-Class Topics (2 hours ethics):
This topic looks at why health care/insurance in the United States costs so much as well as ethical challenges when participants can “game” the system. Risk behaviors are subject to a range over a large group of potential insurance buyers. The behaviors create insurance market problems, such as, pricing uncertainty, increased friction, and subsidization. An interactive exercise will be conducted to help us understand this issue.
